Akron Seeks Approval to Cancel $300M Wastewater Project

The City of Akron, Ohio, has reached an agreement with regulators to cancel a planned $300 million Enhanced High-Rate Treatment (EHRT) facility. The city will instead focus on enhanced wastewater disinfection during peak recreation months.

The decision marks a significant pivot in the city's long-term wastewater management strategy. By opting for enhanced disinfection rather than the construction of the massive EHRT facility, the city aims to achieve environmental compliance while avoiding the substantial capital expenditure associated with the original plan.

This change reflects a growing trend among municipalities to re-evaluate large-scale infrastructure projects in light of evolving regulatory requirements and fiscal constraints. The city will now redirect its focus toward optimizing existing assets to meet water quality standards.

The proposal is currently awaiting final regulatory approval. If successful, the move will save the city and its ratepayers hundreds of millions of dollars while still addressing the primary water quality concerns in the local watershed.
