Great Barrington Initiates $2.5 Million Modernization of Pearl Street Sewage Lift Station

On August 17, 2026, the Town of Great Barrington Wastewater Department initiated site construction on the full modernization of the Pearl Street sewage lift station. First commissioned in May 1999, the critical wastewater conveyance station had operated beyond its intended design lifespan and required structural and mechanical replacement. The renovation plan involves extracting outdated vacuum-assist pump units and installing high-efficiency submersible sewage solids pumps, coupled with upgraded variable frequency drives (VFDs) and modernized supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. The wet well and valve vaults will also undergo structural coating rehabilitation to prevent hydrogen sulfide corrosion. To address flood risk and extreme weather vulnerabilities, the project includes the placement of a heavy-duty, pad-mounted standby diesel generator. This will allow the lift station to maintain full pumping conveyance during local utility grid outages and protect the nearby Housatonic River watershed from overflow risks.
