Hendersonville Secures $72 Million for Wastewater Flood Mitigation
Hendersonville, North Carolina, has been awarded $72 million in grants and low-interest loans to upgrade its wastewater treatment facility. The funding will support critical flood mitigation and expansion projects to ensure long-term service reliability.
The funding package includes a mix of federal, state, and private contributions, including $20.1 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and $50 million in combined grants and loans from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. An additional $2 million was provided by the Dogwood Health Trust.
These investments are designed to harden the facility against future natural disasters and improve overall water quality. The project is a vital component of the city's strategy to protect public health and maintain wastewater service continuity in the face of increasing climate-related risks.
While the current funding is a significant milestone, city officials noted that the total project cost is expected to exceed $100 million. The municipality is actively seeking additional funding sources to cover the remaining balance and complete the planned infrastructure improvements.
