North Carolina Reports $906 Million in Resilience Funding
As of July 2026, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has awarded $906 million in state and federal funds to repair and upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure across the state, with a focus on flood resilience.
The funding has been distributed to 28 counties to help communities recover from storm damage and build systems that can withstand future severe weather. Projects range from repairing damaged treatment plants to weatherizing critical infrastructure components. Beyond direct repairs, the department has focused on "rebuilding with resilience," requiring that all funded projects incorporate measures to protect against future flooding. This long-term approach aims to ensure that public health and water quality are safeguarded in the face of increasing climate-related risks.
