Stantec and Carollo Selected to Advance Pure Water Los Angeles Water Reuse Initiative
The Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation has partnered with Stantec and Carollo Engineers to modernize the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. The collaborative engineering effort aims to transform the facility into a major water recycling hub producing up to 230 million gallons per day.
The Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation (LASAN) has selected engineering firms Stantec and Carollo Engineers to advance the Pure Water Los Angeles program. The multi-billion-dollar initiative focuses on modernizing and reconfiguring the historic Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, transitioning it from a conventional coastal wastewater treatment facility into a major resource recovery and advanced purification center.
Under the progressive development effort, the facility aims to produce up to 230 million gallons per day of advanced treated purified water. The purified effluent will support local groundwater recharge and bolster regional drinking water supplies, drastically reducing Southern California's reliance on imported water supplies amid changing hydrologic conditions.
The project marks one of the most ambitious direct and indirect potable reuse transformations undertaken by a municipal utility in North America. The design and engineering team will integrate cutting-edge purification trains—including membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, and advanced oxidation—to ensure stringent state potable reuse compliance while continuing standard facility operations.
