This procedure is provided as a general educational reference. Anaerobic digesters are complex biological systems that operate at elevated temperatures, produce hazardous gases (including methane and H₂S), and involve confined-space and hot-work hazards. Always follow your facility's site-specific O&M manual, applicable safety procedures and permits, and consult a qualified process engineer / licensed operator before beginning any start-up, shut-down, or maintenance work.

2. Pre-Start Checks
  • Digester clean, inspected, and pressure/leak-tested per the O&M manual.
  • All instrumentation calibrated and in service (temperature, pH, gas flow, pressure).
  • Heating system (hot-water boiler and heat exchanger) filled, vented, and operational.
  • Mixing system (mechanical draft tube / pump recirculation) verified and available.
  • Gas collection, condensate drip traps, flame arresters, and pressure/vacuum relief verified.
  • Confined-space, lockout/tagout, hot-work, and gas-monitoring procedures reviewed and ready.
  • Required seed sludge or inventory available; hauler/storage notified if material is to be moved.

3. Start-Up Procedure (sequential)

2Verify the digester is empty, clean, and has passed hydrostatic / leak test; confirm gas piping is blinded or isolated.

4Purge the digester gas dome and piping with an inert gas (typically nitrogen) per the O&M manual before introducing any seed sludge.
5Fill the digester with primary sludge or a blend of primary + secondary seed sludge to the minimum operating level; record volume charged.
6Heat the digester contents slowly under circulation to the operating temperature setpoint (commonly 95–100°F / mesophilic); maximum change rate per the O&M manual (often ≤1°F/day).
7When temperature is stable and gas production begins, slowly bring the gas collection / handling system online; check flame arresters and drip traps.
8Begin feed at a reduced rate (approx. 25–35% of design loading); hold for several days; confirm VFA / alkalinity ratio is on-trend.
9Verify all safety systems are functional: gas detector alarms, emergency isolation valves, pressure relief, fire suppression.
10Complete required permit / confined-space / hot-work approvals; confirm operating permit and log are posted.

5. Shut-Down (Take-Down) Procedure

1Notify operations, maintenance, and supervision of the planned shut-down; record start time and reason in the digester log.
2Reduce sludge feed to the digester gradually; stop feed pumps and isolate the feed line per the O&M sequence.
3Maintain digester temperature, mixing, and gas handling while inventory is drawn down or held; monitor pressure and level continuously.
4Withdraw or transfer digested sludge to the planned destination (dewatering, storage, or hauling) following the transfer plan.
5If the digester is being taken out of service for cleaning/maintenance, hold mixing until sludge level is drawn to the entry point, then stop mixers.
6Purge the gas dome and connected piping with air or inert gas as required; perform and record gas tests before any work begins.
7Blind / isolate incoming sludge, removed sludge, hot-water heating, and gas lines; lock out and tag out each energy source.
8Post confined-space entry permit and atmospheric monitoring plan before opening; do not enter until entry is certified.
9Complete the planned maintenance / inspection; document all work, parts, and deviations from the planned procedure.
10Record shut-down completion in the digester log and notify the next shift; place tags specifying status of equipment.
6. Emergency Shut-Down Triggers — Notify Immediately
  • Loss of temperature control (heating system failure) — assess and notify; reduce feed
  • High / low digester gas pressure or vacuum alarm — investigate immediately
  • Foaming event — reduce/stop feed; do NOT stop mixing without approval
  • H2S alarm / gas detection reading above action level — evacuate and follow response plan
  • Loss of mixing for an extended period — refer to O&M manual; protect seed inventory
  • Confirmed sludge or gas leak — isolate, evacuate area, and follow emergency response
