Viscosity and Additive Packages

Choosing the correct viscosity is the most important single decision in lubricant selection — additives are secondary but essential.

Viscosity grade (ISO VG 32, 46, 68, 100, 220, 320) refers to the average kinematic viscosity at 40°C; the correct grade depends on operating speed, temperature, and load.

EP (extreme pressure) additives typically required for gearboxes operating under heavy loads and shock conditions — common on blower drives and large gear pumps.

Anti-wear additives typically required for hydraulic systems and lightly loaded gearboxes that operate at moderate loads continuously.

Cross-substituting lubricants without confirming additive compatibility is a common cause of equipment failure — when in doubt, use the original spec and document the brand used.
