Equipment Startup & Shutdown Procedures
Documented sequences that prevent damage or process upset from an improperly sequenced equipment change.
Starting a large pump or blower without following the correct sequence (priming, valve positioning, ramp-up) can cause cavitation, water hammer, or motor damage.
Written startup/shutdown checklists reduce reliance on any single operator's memory, particularly important for equipment operated infrequently.
Watch for: shortcuts taken during routine, frequently repeated startups — familiarity is a common reason experienced staff skip steps that protect against a rare but real failure mode.
