Multi-Step Combined Calculations
Practice problems requiring you to chain two or three formulas together to reach a final answer, as many higher-grade exam questions do.
MLSS, lbs = MLSS, mg/L × Aerator Vol, MG × 8.34
F/M = (BOD, lbs/day) ÷ (MLVSS, lbs)
DT, hrs = Volume, gal ÷ (Flow, gpm × 60)
SOR, gpd/ft = Flow, gpd ÷ Weir length, ft
A common combined problem calculates MLSS mass first, uses it to find F/M, then asks you to interpret whether the resulting F/M value indicates a healthy operating range.
Work through each step separately and confirm the intermediate result makes physical sense before proceeding to the next formula, rather than chaining calculations blindly.
Practicing combined, multi-step problems specifically, not just single-formula drills, is the most direct preparation for Grade 3-4 exam calculation sections.
After each step, sanity-check the unit — if you're computing a loader number and getting 'mg/L' where you expect 'lbs/day', you've skipped a × MGD × 8.34 conversion before moving on.
