Disinfection Capacity Limits

UV and chlorination systems have a fixed hydraulic capacity that can become the actual bottleneck during peak flow.

UV systems lose effective dose per unit volume as flow rises past design capacity, even when upstream biological treatment handles the flow adequately.

Chlorination systems have a fixed maximum chemical feed rate that can be exceeded before hydraulic capacity is reached.

Disinfection failure during high flow is one of the more common causes of reportable wet weather violations industry-wide.

A capital plan that doesn't address disinfection capacity at peak flow leaves the plant exposed regardless of how well other wet weather steps are managed.
