SSO Reporting Timeframes

Sanitary sewer overflow reporting timeframes vary by state but generally require rapid initial verbal notification followed by a written follow-up.

Most states require initial verbal notification of an SSO within 24 hours (sometimes less, particularly for ones affecting public health).

Written notification within 5 days (often 7 days) typically requires detailed description of the overflow location, volume, duration, cause, and corrective actions.

Some states require public notification (often via website posting) of SSOs meeting certain criteria — track these specific requirements separate from the regular reporting requirements.

Document internal response to each SSO — what was done, when, by whom — so the written report can accurately describe response actions and corrective measures planned or taken.
