Selector Basin Strategy
A small, high-F/M zone ahead of the main aeration basin that suppresses filament growth by favoring fast-growing floc formers.
Selector basins expose incoming biomass to a brief period of very high substrate concentration, an environment that favors fast-growing floc-forming bacteria over slower filaments.
Effective mainly against filaments that thrive on low substrate concentration (like low F/M filaments); less effective against low-DO or septicity-driven filaments.
Retrofitting a selector zone is a common long-term structural fix for plants with chronic, recurring bulking that short-term DO or F/M corrections haven't resolved.
