Ammonia-Based Aeration Control (ABAC)
Uses real-time effluent ammonia readings, not just DO setpoints, to control blower output.
ABAC feeds continuous ammonia analyzer data into the blower control loop, allowing DO setpoint to adjust automatically based on actual nitrification performance rather than a fixed value.
This approach can cut aeration energy meaningfully during periods of low ammonia load while still guaranteeing capacity is available when loading rises.
Requires a reliable, well-maintained online ammonia analyzer — a fouled or drifting sensor feeding a control loop can cause worse process swings than a simple fixed DO setpoint.
