Step-Feed Nitrogen Removal
Splitting influent flow across multiple feed points to create internal anoxic zones without extra recycle pumping.
Step-feed configurations introduce influent at several points along a plug-flow basin, using the carbon in each new feed pulse to drive denitrification in the zone just ahead of it.
This approach can achieve meaningful nitrogen removal in plants not originally designed with a dedicated MLE-style anoxic zone, often with modest retrofit cost.
Balancing flow split ratios between feed points is the main operating variable, and getting it wrong can starve either the nitrification or denitrification side of the process.
