Luxury Uptake vs. EBPR
Distinguishing true biological phosphorus removal from simple assimilation into growing biomass.
Ordinary heterotrophic growth assimilates some phosphorus for cell synthesis (luxury uptake), but this removes far less phosphorus than genuine PAO-driven EBPR.
A system can show modest phosphorus removal from luxury uptake alone even without a functioning anaerobic zone, which can mask an EBPR problem if not distinguished properly.
Confirming true EBPR requires verifying the anaerobic zone phosphorus release and subsequent aerobic zone uptake pattern, not just checking final effluent phosphorus.
