Disease Exposure Risks

Wastewater operators face elevated exposure risk to several vaccine-preventable and waterborne diseases.

Vaccination status for tetanus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and typhoid should be confirmed and maintained for all operations staff — these vaccines prevent serious illness from common wastewater exposures.

Hand-to-mouth transmission (eating, smoking, touching face) is the primary transmission route; handwashing discipline before breaks and at end of shift is the most effective personal prevention.

Needlesticks and cuts from sharps require immediate medical evaluation and post-exposure prophylaxis consideration — never treat sharps injuries as 'no big deal.'

Report any unusual illness to occupational health, particularly gastrointestinal symptoms in the days after a high-exposure event — early reporting of disease exposure events is essential for worker's compensation and treatment.
