Chlorine CT Value

Calculates CT (concentration × contact time) for chlorine disinfection and compares it against a required CT for microbial inactivation. Used for surface water discharge compliance with coliform limits under the Surface Water Treatment Rule.

Disinfection
Formula
CT (mg/L·min) = Residual Chlorine (mg/L) × Contact Time (min, T10)
Variables & Units
Residual Chlorine(mg/L)

Free or total chlorine residual measured at the contact basin effluent.

Contact Time (T10)(min)

Time for 90% of the flow to pass through the basin. T10 is the basin's theoretical detention time × baffling factor (typically 0.3–0.7).

Required CT(mg/L·min)

Optional target CT from your NPDES permit or the applicable LT2ESWTR log-reduction table.

Worked Example
A 2.0 mg/L chlorine residual at the basin effluent with a T10 contact time of 30 minutes: CT = 2.0 × 30 = 60 mg/L·min. If the required CT for 3-log virus inactivation at your effluent temperature and pH is 100, the basin is BELOW required CT. Increase residual, extend contact time, or improve baffling.
