The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the availability of $10.8 million in grant funding targeting water sector workforce development. The funding aims to assist utilities, educational institutions, and public works departments in attracting, training, and retaining skilled operations personnel. Utility leadership across the country has increasingly flagged operator retirements as a top operational concern.
The initiative revitalizes the 2020 Water Sector Workforce Initiative and operates under the Innovative Water Infrastructure Workforce Development Grant program authorized by the America's Water Infrastructure Act. Eligible recipients include nonprofit service organizations, labor organizations, community colleges, and local public works departments managing clean water utilities.
Applications for the competitive program are open through October 5, 2026. Selected programs are expected to expand apprenticeship models, operator certification pathways, and hands-on technical training to ensure continuity in vital wastewater and drinking water operations.
