What is process control in wastewater treatment?+
Process control is the daily adjustment of a biological treatment system — food-to-mass ratio, MCRT, RAS and WAS rates, DO, and wasting — to keep the biomass healthy and the effluent in permit. Operators read lab data, settleometer results, and trends, then make small setpoint changes rather than large reactive ones.
What is MCRT and how is it calculated?+
Mean Cell Residence Time (MCRT) is the average time biomass stays in the activated sludge system. It is calculated as the total mass of solids under aeration (plus clarifiers) divided by the mass wasted per day (WAS plus solids lost in effluent). Typical activated sludge MCRT runs 3–15 days depending on the plant's target treatment and season.
What is the F/M ratio?+
The food-to-microorganism (F/M) ratio compares BOD loading to the mass of microorganisms under aeration. High F/M can cause pin floc and poor settling; low F/M risks filamentous bulking or endogenous respiration. Most conventional activated sludge plants target an F/M around 0.2–0.5 (lb BOD / lb MLVSS / day).
What is sludge volume index (SVI)?+
SVI measures how well activated sludge settles: it is the volume (mL) occupied by one gram of solids after 30 minutes in a settleometer. An SVI below 100 typically indicates good settling, 100–150 is acceptable, and above 150 suggests bulking — often filamentous organisms, nutrient deficiency, or low DO that operators track and correct early.
